"Belladonna" is Italian for "beautiful woman." It is also a member of the nightshade family, along with tomatoes and potatoes. In the Victorian era, women would apply a drop of belladonna to their eyes to dilate their pupils, which was thought to make them more seductive. Too much, and belladonna caused hallucinations, typically sensations of flying. More than that, belladonna was fatal.
